NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR THE EXTRACTION, FLARING OR RECOVERY OF LANDFILL GAS

In this notice, the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs has published national standards for the extraction, flaring or recovery of landfill gas in terms of section 19(3)(a) of the Act.

These standards apply to landfill gas extraction, flaring or recovery facilities initiated, constructed or upgraded after the coming into operation of the standards. The standards are applicable throughout the Republic of South Africa and aims to prevent or minimize potential negative impacts on the bio-physical and socio-economic environments.

A person who lawfully conducted the activity of extracting, flaring or recovering of landfill gas prior to and on the date of coming into effect of these standards, may continue with the activity for the duration as stipulated in the existing approval, authorisation or licence, until its expiry.
