The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs has published national standards for the scrapping or recovery of motor vehicles, in terms of section 19(3)(a) of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008).

The standards are aimed at controlling the scrapping or recovery of motor vehicles at a facility that falls within the thresholds as described in these standards in order to prevent or minimize potential negative impacts on the bio-physical and socio-economic environment.
