Posted 24 April 2017

The Minister of Environmental Affairs has, in terms of sections 19(2), read with sections 19(10)(a), 72 and 73 of the NEM:WA, given notice of her intention to amend the List of Waste Management Activities that have, or are likely to have a Detrimental Effect on the Environment.

The amendments pertain to the deletion from “Category A” and the insertion into “Category C” of “the sorting, shredding, grinding, crushing, screening or bailing of general waste”.

In conjunction with the above proposed amendments, the Minister of Environmental Affairs has, in terms of section 7(2)(a), read with section 73 of NEM:WA, published the draft National Norms and Standards for the Sorting, Shredding, Grinding, Crushing, Screening and Bailing of general waste.

A person undertaking an activity listed in Category C does not require a waste management licence in terms of the NEM:WA but must comply with the relevant norms and standards.

Members of the public are invited to submit written comments within 60 days of publication of this notice (i.e. on or before 16 May 2017).
