NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: AIR QUALITY ACT (39/2004): AMENDMENTS OF THE LIST OF ACTIVITIES WHICH RESULT IN ATMOSPHERIC EMISSION WHICH HAVE OR MAY HAVE A SIGNIFICANT DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING HEALTH, SOCIAL CONDITIONS, ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS OR CULTURAL HERITAGE

The Minister of Environmental Affairs has, in terms of section 21(1)(b) of the NEM:AQA, amended the list of activities which result in atmospheric emissions which have or may have a significant detrimental effect on the environment, including health, social conditions, economic conditions, ecological conditions or cultural heritage as published under GNR 893 on 22 November 2013.  

The amendments effected pertain to the following activities –

  • Sub-category 1.1: Solid Fuel Combustion Installations;
  • Sub-category 1.2: Liquid Fuel Combustion Installations;
  • Sub-category 1.3: Solid Biomass Combustion Installations;
  • Sub-category 1.4: Gas Combustion Installations;
  • Sub-category 2.1: Combustion Installations (Petroleum Industry, the production of gaseous and liquid fuels as well as petrochemicals from crude oil, coal, gas or biomass);
  • Sub-category 3.1: Combustion Installations (Carbonization and Coal Gasification);
  • Sub-category 3.4: Char, Charcoal and Carbon Black Production (Carbonization and Coal Gasification);
  • Sub-category 4.2: Combustion Installations (Metallurgical Industry);
  • Sub-category 4.3: Primary Aluminium Production (Metallurgical Industry);
  • Sub-category 5.3: Clamp Kilns for Brick Production (Mineral Processing, Storage and Handling).
