NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: WASTE ACT (59/2008): NATIONAL NORMS AND STANDARDS FOR THE SORTING, SHREDDING, GRINDING, CRUSHING, SCREENING OR BALING OF GENERAL WASTE

The Minister of Environmental Affairs has, in terms of section 7(2)(a) of the NEM:WA, set National Norms and Standards for the Sorting, Grinding, Crushing, Screening and Baling of General Waste (“Norms and Standards”).

The Norms and Standards provide, inter alia, that –

  • All new waste facilities must be registered 90 days prior to any construction taking place;
  • Existing waste facilities must register within 90 days of the publishing of the Norms and Standards (i.e. on or before 09 January 2018);
  • Those waste facilities that are already registered do not need to re-register but must comply with the Norms and Standards from 11 October 2017;
  • A waste facility that is less than 1000m2 must, inter alia, register in terms of the Norms and Standards.
