The Minister of Environmental Affairs has, in terms of section 43(1)(b)(i) read with section 43(3) of the NEMBA, published the Biodiversity Management Plan for the African Lion (Panthera Leo) in South Africa for implementation.
The purpose of the biodiversity management plan, amongst others, is to improve the conservation status of lions within a broader conservation context, maintain the current degree of protection of wild and managed wild lions, reassess the conservation status of managed wild lions, enhance the conservation status of managed wild lions, assess the management of the captive lion population and develop and implement effective communication tools that are informed by scientific research.
