National Environmental Management: Waste Act (59/2008): National norms and standards for the remediation of contaminated land and soil quality in the Republic of South Africa

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs published for public comment notice of her intention to make national norms and standards for the remediation of contaminated land and soil quality in terms of section 7(2)(d) read with section 73(1) of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008. The purpose of these norms and standards is to inter alia

  • provide for a uniform national approach relating to the remediation of contaminated land;
  • limit uncertainties about the most appropriate criteria and method to apply in the assessment of contaminated land; and
  • provide minimum standards for assessing necessary environmental protection measures for remediation activities.
