NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: WASTE ACT (59/2008): LIST OF WASTE MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE, OR ARE LIKELY TO HAVE, A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON THE ENVIRONMENT

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs has, in terms of section 19(2) of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008, amended the List of Waste Management Activities that have, or are likely to have, a detrimental effect on the environment published under Government Notice 718 on 3 July 2009.

The amendments includes the deletion of certain waste management activities such that these activities no longer require a waste management licence in terms of the Act, including inter alia, –

  • The storage of general waste, excluding the storage of general waste in lagoons;
  • The storage of hazardous waste, excluding the storage of hazardous waste in lagoons;
  • The storage of waste tyres;
  • The scrapping of motor vehicles.
